Fashion DesignerDamir Doma

Recently, Damir Doma accepted the interview with SSENSE. He talked about the education and influence of his mother who was the same as a fashion designer from the childhood. He studied the working hours of Raf Simons and Dirk Schonberger, and the similarities and differences between the personal brand of the same name established in 2007 and the SILENT design of the main line and the branch line.

Next we will bring you an interview.

Let's start with your childhood.

Since childhood, it has been all kinds of fabrics.

clothing

And fashion around, and the education of your mother, who is also a fashion designer, must have a great influence on your achievements.

Yes, my mother has a studio, I can say that I grew up from childhood, and I was surrounded by all the fashion related things all day, so fashion is also very natural for me.

Some people think fashion is a luxury, but for me, it is a kind of thing that I grew up with. It is very close to me. Therefore, I know something about fashion and decide to move forward in this direction when I grow up.

Your mother's factory is actually you now.

brand

How does it feel to maintain such close cooperation with her in the clothing production area?

First of all, I started my career at such a young age because my mother's studio and factory gave me many opportunities to start making personal series between 25 and 26 years old. This is rare.

Most people who want to start their own design career are not easy to find the ideal factory cooperation, which is not difficult for me.

So all of this is positive for you.

Impeccable and able to work with my mother is wonderful.

I've been busy with work. If I hadn't been with her, I wouldn't have had time to see her.

You have taught heavyweight masters such as Raf Simons and Dirk Schonberger to tell us what valuable experience you have learned.

When people talk about fashion and designers, what they see is always superficial. It really doesn't interest me.

For me, the most interesting part is the time in Antwerp, which has witnessed the difficulties of designers struggling to run their businesses. To some extent, Dirk and Raf are the same.

There are two strange things about fashion.

For example, in front of the media, you have to talk about fashion brings you so much joy, but the fact behind it is that sometimes our personal business is cruel and realistic. This is also a very important lesson for me.

Especially when he worked with Dirk Schonberger, because I was going to start his own brand when he was bankrupt, the brand was bought by a new investor, but he soon went bankrupt again.

All of this is very realistic and impressive to me! Do you know how difficult it is? People are always thinking, "I want to be a fashion designer", but they do not know how difficult it is to maintain the brand in a stable stage.

The first series is easy to be right, but then it is necessary to grow, to continue, and to be accepted by everyone. This process is really hard.

Now, it's been 5 years since your debut in Paris in 2007. Do you think the early experience gained in Antwerp has contributed to the success of the brand now?

The time in Antwerp really helped me understand who I wanted to be, such as "who am I" or "where I want to go".

Antwerp is a very strange place. Most people who like to spend the weekend or the whole week are living there. So for a long time, almost three years, I feel lonely and isolated.

Most of my time is myself, and it's an important experience, because we are often distracted by all kinds of things.

Where I can concentrate, so it was a good starting point for me to start my own series in half a year and move to Paris, that is, I have been here for over five years.

To be honest, I don't often have so much time to review what happened in the past five years, but I always feel a little surprised when I think about it.

Four years ago, I worked in a sixteenth County studio with a partner and an intern.

Today, when you come to visit our office, you will find that there are about 1000 square meters, almost 30 staff members.

So don't forget it! (HA HA)

Let's talk about the future. Most of you are artists, painters or conceptual designers who have great influence on you. Does this inspire your design?

I don't think there is any influence on my inspiration. You should not see the elements that come directly from art in my costume design.

This is very subtle.

What interests me is the artistic form of creation, and when I design, I usually use similar forms and ways of thinking.

In terms of concept, I will take into account the material, contour and length, until I finish the whole design, which is also the most exciting part of my work.
