Zhang Yulian, a technical consultant of the center for quality supervision and inspection (Guangzhou), pointed out that perfluorinated compounds (including perfluorooctane sulfonate compounds PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) have high stability and special waterproof, oil and antifouling properties. As multi-purpose surfactants, they are widely used in waterproofing, oil proofing and antifouling agents for textile, printing and dyeing, leather and so on. They will also be used as additives in chemical products such as fire extinguishing foam and coating.

Among them, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its derivatives are applied in surface treatment of household products, convenience food packaging, and stain resistant materials and fibers.

Zhang Yulian pointed out that, due to the large number of these compounds, they can enter into soil, water and other environmental media in various ways, and can enter many animal tissues and human bodies through the food chain, causing great harm to human health.

However, at present, domestic laws and regulations do not limit such substances.

She also said that PFOS and PFOA substitutes have been studied, and products have been published as early as 2003~2005, and commercial alternatives have been commercialized.

There are advantages and disadvantages of alternatives, such as non PFOS fluorocarbons, non-toxic and harmless, little bioaccumulation, waterproof and easy decontamination, but poor oil repellency.

Experts believe that because outdoor clothing needs extra functions, such as waterproofing, oil prevention, etc., more chemicals are needed to handle, and it is also easy to produce harmful chemicals.
