According to the reports of Sika finance website of Cote d'Ivoire and the news agency of anatolu of Turkey from March 20 to 21, 2022, the twitter released by Malian presidential office on March 19 showed that in 2021 / 2022, Mali's cotton output reached 760000 tons, surpassing that of Benin and becoming Africa's largest cotton producer again. This is mainly due to the positive support policies such as government subsidies and increasing purchase prices. Previously, in the 2017 / 2018 production season, Mali was the largest cotton producer in Africa, with an output of 725000 tons. However, in 2018 / 2019, Mali's cotton production dropped to 657000 tons, while Benin became the largest cotton producer in Africa with 678000 tons. In the 2019 / 2020 production season, Mali's output is 700000 tons, still behind that of Benin (714000 tons). In 2020 / 2021, the new crown pneumonia epidemic led to a decline in global cotton demand. Malaysian cotton farmers gave up cotton production in large quantities, with a yield of 147000 tons, which was the worst production record since the 1980s. Therefore, Mali's cotton production fell out of the top three in Africa. In Mali, cotton is the second largest export product after gold. In 2020, it exports 163 thousand tons, creating 161.6 billion West African francs (about 272 million US dollars) of foreign exchange income.
