Nepalese Exporters Seek American GSP For Shawls

Considering the upcoming Nepali - US trade and Investment Council meeting, Nepal's shawl producers and exporters have intensified their efforts to lobby the government for the GSP.


The conference is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu in March this year.

Chyangra shawl, the shawl is a top brand of Nepal's shawl product.

However, the heavy tariffs caused Nepal's shawl project to lose their market share in the US market.


Nepal's exporters have asked the Ministry of Commerce to strengthen diplomatic efforts to seek GSP for Nepal's shawl.


At present, the United States uses 7-21% for shawl products imported from Nepal.

Some of the shawl products are currently included in the categories of garments and clothing, and are subject to 17% of the customs duties.


In 2010, the Nepali Clothing Association asked the US Senate to increase 11 categories of projects to Nepal in the United States under the GSP.


In the past few years, Nepal's shawl products have been exported to the United States.

In the past fiscal year, Nepal exported a 300 million rupee shawl, less than 1 billion rupees in the 1999-2000 fiscal year.
