In May, Japan'S Clothing Retail Increased By 42% Month On Month, Down 34% Year On Year

Total retail sales of goods decreased by 12.3% year on year

Japan's retail sales fell by 29.0% year-on-year for 12 months, but Japan's economy fell by 29.0% for two consecutive months. Retail sales in Japan fell 13.9% in April this year, the biggest drop since March 1998, as the new crown epidemic and extended blockade measures hit consumer confidence.

The state of emergency has been lifted in Japan since May 25. In May, retail sales increased slightly by 2.1% over the previous month, reaching the bottom for the first time since February, indicating that the worst economic impact of the epidemic may have passed.

Clothing retail increased by 41.9% month on month

From the perspective of clothing retail, Japan's clothing retail sales in May reached 589 billion yen, up 41.9% month on month, but still decreased by 34.3% compared with the same period of last year, slowing down from 54.1% in April.

From the perspective of major clothing sales channels, department stores have suffered far more than supermarkets.

Department stores: in May, clothing retail in department stores decreased by 73.8% year-on-year, including men's clothing sales decreased by 73.9%, women's / children's wear by 74.2%, other clothing by 65.0% and clothing by 74.3%.

Supermarket: in May, the retail sales of clothing in supermarkets decreased by 29.8% year-on-year, of which the sales of men's clothing decreased by 30.0%, women's clothing / children's wear by 33.1%, other clothing by 7.5% and clothing by 28.8%.

UNIQLO fell 18% in May

UNIQLO, Japan's largest clothing retailer, saw a sharp decline of 1.5% year-on-year.  

As Japan entered a state of emergency on April 8, UNIQLO UNIQLO's domestic same store sales plummeted by 56.5% in April, the biggest drop since records began in September 1996, and fell 27.8% in March.

For the third consecutive quarter, the crackdown on Japan's GDP is expected to shrink by more than 20% in the second ten days of the month, due to the contraction of the epidemic situation in the second ten days of May.
